Walking to school
(1) Every morning, millions of students around the world travel to school by car or bus. (2) However, a growing number of teachers and doctors argue that walking is a better choice.
(3) First of all, walking is good for health, because regular exercise strengthens the heart. (4) A walk also wakes up the brain, so students who walk arrive at school more alert and ready to learn. (5) Some students prefer to start lessons later in the morning. (6) Finally, fewer cars on the road mean cleaner air near the school gates.
(7) Of course, walking is not always possible. (8) Some families live too far from school, and in winter the roads can be dangerous. (9) Parents also worry about children crossing busy streets alone.
(10) Nevertheless, even a short walk of ten minutes can make a difference. (11) If schools and parents work together to plan safe routes, many more students could enjoy these benefits.
